Horsehair Hummingbird Nest on Pinto paper My
sister Jean puts mane and tail clippings from her horses out for the birds each spring. This is one of the nests
she found that hummingbirds had made from the horsehair. I found this Nepalese art paper for the
backing and had to use it because it was called "Pinto".
Nest with Quilt Batting
My sister Ann is a long-time quilt
maker and puts out fabric scraps in the spring for the birds. She found this nest which has polyester quilt batting in
it on her Wellington, Colorado ranch. It is printed on the Pinto paper and has a soft white paper colle'd where the batting
was.
Twig Nest
This tiny nest was found by my sister Joan. It's made of brittle angular twigs with a grassy lining. I liked out the
twigs zigzag around the edges of the nest. Not sure what bird built this, but it was tiny. The nest is 3" in diameter.
Oriole Nest
My sister Mary found this nest hanging from a tree in her woods in Minnesota. When I picked up the nest to draw it, a
tiny orange tipped feather floated out, so I knew it had to be a Baltimore oriole. Mary puts out orange slices in the summer
for the orange orioles.
Red-Winged Blackbird
Sister Jean found this nest in a wet spot of horse pasture along a fence line. These nests are usually found strung between
cattail stems. Three baby blackbirds successfully fledged from this nest. This is the largest of the etchings at about 10
x 15".
Robin's nest and Yellowjacket nest
I found this nest! I combined it with the yellowjacket nest because I often find their nests in my birdfeeders and birdhouses.
This etching is printed on a paper that is embedded with plant bits. I've included it in a multiple plate print below.
